With 130 pupils aged from 2-16, River School is quite different from your average educational establishment. The independent Christian School in Worcester has earned a strong reputation in the region for consistently achieving high results for its pupils, attracting highly skilled staff and also investing in the pastoral care of its pupils.
Based in an old estate that dates back to 1830, the classrooms are spread around the grounds with nursery and primary school education taking place in the former house while the senior classes take place in a mixture of new and converted buildings in the grounds.
Whilst the broadband service was adequate in the main building, lessons taking place in converted outbuildings, particularly those a considerable distance from the main house, sometimes struggled to get a connection.
The wireless service from Airband has allowed us to maintain our low fee level for parents whilst upgrading the quality of broadband provision for our pupils.
But the disparate spread of buildings is not a problem for Airband’s wireless service, which has replaced BT on the site using a range of technology to maximise the service, including wireless access points, switches and point to point, all linked to a backbone of cable that runs through the main school. Airband has enabled the school to achieve 30Mbps connection and enables IT to be used in teaching regardless of the classroom location.
Carol Parry, Head teacher, at River School said: “ We initially started the new contract for the senior classes in the outlying buildings that were in the greatest need, but we’ve now rolled it out across the school to serve primary and nursery too.
“Our fees are around 40 per cent of that of rival independent schools so we don’t have a lot of spare cash to spend on IT equipment or upgrades.
