Should my business have a leased line?

Choosing the right broadband package for your business can be tricky. It is very much dependent on how much your business relies on the internet to operate, however, the future is looking increasingly connected, with many critical business activities relying on the internet, for example, banking, business systems and data backup/storage.

What is a leased line?

A leased line is a dedicated high-speed, fixed-bandwidth connection, meaning that it is reserved for use by only one subscriber at all times, enabling fast, consistent speeds no matter what time of day.

Symmetric speeds

A common gripe for a lot of businesses is a slow upload speed. With consumer packages from all ISPs, upload speeds are considerably lower than download speeds, mainly due to the ratio of activities that require downloading rather than uploading.

This, however, can be frustrating for businesses who upload data to systems, operate data backup or need to upload large files to the web, such as videos or photos.

A leased line solves these problems as the connection is symmetric, so the upload speed matches the download speed, i.e. 50Mbps Download / 50Mbps Upload, 100/100 etc.

Better SLAs and faster fix times

Problems with internet connections are a concern for any business – any downtime means productivity dives and work can’t necessarily take place.

Leased lines come with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that ensure any major issues are fixed as an absolute priority, usually within a few hours, as opposed to a few days that some standard business broadband packages guarantee.

What’s the verdict?

Ultimately, it is your business and you do know what is best for it.

A leased line is ideally suited to businesses who support bandwidth-intensive activities and services or require an absolutely consistent and fast service, perhaps for the likes of an extensive VoIP network or VPN.

It wouldn’t, however, make economic sense for a homeworker or business to get a leased line if their requirements end at surfing the web and sending emails.

This is why here at Airband, we have got packages to suit every business, with business broadband packages starting from as little as £50, to tailored leased line packages perfect for large, internet-intensive businesses.
